Men who have tolerated the auction block will tremble at the sight of a rifle. Editors who have made peace with families sold apart will call one old man mad. Politicians who have spent their careers compromising with kidnappers will suddenly discover their reverence for law.

But let us be honest.

The South has lived by violence for generations. Its wealth is violence. Its elegance is violence. Its cotton is violence. Its “order” is violence folded neatly into ledgers and sermons.

John Brown has not introduced violence into the slavery question.

He has refused to let the country pretend the violence was not already there.

OAnderson_Free: I will say what many are dancing around. Brown was brave. Brown was sincere. Brown was willing to die for the enslaved when many white abolitionists were only willing to lecture for them.

But we must be careful. The story is already becoming about Brown’s soul, Brown’s madness, Brown’s courage, Brown’s beard, Brown’s Bible, Brown’s death.

What about the enslaved people he expected to rise?

What about the free Black man killed early in the raid?

What about the Black men who joined him and will be forgotten or flattened into footnotes?

What about those who did not rise because they understood, better than Brown perhaps, the cost of a failed rebellion?

We can honor Brown without surrendering the whole meaning of slavery to one white man’s martyrdom.
